Spelling & Grammer (SPaG)
Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar (SPaG) at Endon Hall…
The National Curriculum for English (2014) places a very significant emphasis on SPaG (spelling and grammar). For each year group there are word lists, spelling rules/patterns, grammar and technical vocabulary to learn.
At Endon Hall, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) is taught as part of the English lesson and/or Whole Class Guided Reading (WCGR) lesson and there is also one explicit, purposeful SPaG lesson per English unit of work, to introduce and practise key grammar skills.
At the start of each English lesson, children in Years 1–6 independently complete a whole class SPaG warm up focused on grammar focused test questions. Spelling test style questions also form part of the warm up and focus on previously taught spelling patterns/rules, in order to support the retention of spellings. In addition, in Key Stage 2, a daily, discreet SPaG lesson is in place, focusing on year group objectives (20 minutes per day). In Foundation Stage and KS1, a daily 25-minute Phonics session, that incorporates spellling and grammar, takes place.
In addition to this, staff take opportunities in other curriculum subjects to either teach and/or reinforce SPaG expectations. Rewards and incentives are used to encourage transference of spelling and grammar skills into written work.
Supporting Your Child With Spelling and Grammar
Homework activities and spellings may link to SPaG and regular practise is really important. Teachers and children look for correct spelling within independent work as it is important that spellings are learnt and applied.
Below are some resources that will help you to understand what the curriculum expectations are and enable you to help your child at home.
